The Poison Sky

Brigadier reference! Brigadier reference! He got a knighthood! They put it in there, and they didn’t have to and I loved it so much.

North Korea is part of some international nuclear defence strategy? Not only in the Whoniverse did North Korea get to keep its nukes, but the international community thought it was a good idea to keep nuclear weapons in North Korea? Look, I can put up with all the crazy wrong pseudo-science in the world. Hell, I can even get past the idea that the UN would have some kind of standing military in the form of UNIT and the UN would have some kind of overarching control over nuclear weapons. But that, that, blows my mind right out of the show and into WTF territory.

Aw. Ross. I really wanted him to live. I’m so happy the Doctor got upset at his death. He may not like military, but that doesn’t stop him forming attachments to individual soldiers. I think he even started to admire Colonel Mace in the end, and how could anyone not?

Mace was all kinds of brilliant in this episode. Yeah, he sent Ross to his death, but using the Valliant’s engines to clear the fog, giving that speech, demanding the Sontaran turn and face him, and he hooked-up. I vote for the return of Colonel Mace!

Really kind of loved the Doctor’s subtle admiration for UNIT in the end. He is all bluster sometimes with little follow through. Admit it Doctor, you love them as much as the audience do.

Freema was really really good as dying Evil!Martha. It felt like she hadn’t had much to do lately, and it’s great she had a chance to shine this episode. I’m also very happy that Martha didn’t want to travel with the Doctor again. I feared that with her one episode trip, she would be a return to the early days of series three in their relationship. Plus the kidnapping the reluctant Companion thing was another nod to Old School.

“But he’ll kill me.” Oh, Donna. She really does have the reactions of a genuine human rather than a superhero. And loved her punching him before joining in on the group cuddle at the end - it pretty much said everything. Particularly since the Doctor blowing up the Sontaran ship was very much like the drowning of the Racnoss in TRB, and Donna hugging him like Martha did would undermine her disgust at that action of his and go a long way towards character assassination.

I did think she was going to get to fly the TARDIS solo this episode, but obviously not. Maybe they’re saving that for a later one.

Also love the Doctor’s line “Stop talking about yourself like that.” She not just good for him, he’s good for her. Those two are so good for each other. Oh, I love them. Also loved how the Doctor didn’t freak out at her kidnapping. It shows a deep level of respect and faith in her abilities.

Wilf continues to be adorable. I always kind of liked Sylvia (but then, I always kind of like Francine Jones as well) – she does think she is doing what is best for her daughter – but it was great to have those moment in which she was not the nag, but rather the axe-wielding cliff-hanger resolver, and then later fearful for her life.

I really liked Luke’s super genius kids refusing point blank to support him. I’m a bit sick of redemption arcs, so I really liked that it was a fall from grace, betrayal and the realisation he was an idiot that prompted the heroic sacrifice. Though I was surprised they would have a minor die in such a way.

Did anyone else notice that super genius boy that defied Luke was really really hot?

There still wasn't near enough of Donna and Marta bonding. Next week?

Oh, and unexpected!Rose. I can’t believe how subtle it was. It didn’t undermine the plot of overshadow Martha and Donna. Holy crap. This is really starting to give me hope for the final three episodes.

Anyway, good episode. I think it was my least favourite of the season. But, because I love this season so much, that’s saying it’s still above average and I enjoyed it immensely.

Next week: I’m trying not to judge on the concept and 'next time' alone. It’s hard. I do not like.
