Heroes, Sanctuary, Universe

As I mentioned briefly early, the Heroes volume finale isn't bad. In fact, I would categorise it as quite good. I think for a few reasons:

  • Sylar's back to being evil and he isn't a Petrelli

  • Daphne, Matt and Ando make a great superhero team.

  • The callbacks to the first season are strong in this one: an exploding (wo)man and all problems can be solved by Claire jumping through a window.

  • Micah may be back in Volume Four

  • With Hiro de-powered, it really does look like the time travelling has ended. Well, until Ando and Daphne decide they want to mess with time again. But the Ando is powered and Hiro not has potential to be interesting next volume.

But mostly because Worf is the US President. Nope, the Star Trek casting never gets old. And yes, I probably will be tuning in next volume because apparently there is something wrong with me. But then Bryan Fuller has made me hopeful for this show. But I swear, if I get even a wiff of another Sylar redemption arc, I'm off faster than Daphne.

I've decided that while Sanctuary shall be never a particularly accolade worth show, it is fantastic in a completely cracky way. The season finale two-parter has Magnus team up with Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper, Nikola Tesla (i.e. the old crew) and the Invisible Man's invisible Granddaugher - and it is awesome in the way only having fictional characters and historical figures bitching at each other can be.

I'm also still on a Stargate thing at the moment. I keep on meaning to watch Atlantis, but I can't seem to find the time. Add it to the big list of shows I'm going to watch one day when I discovery the secret of having free time (along with Battlestar Galactica) Watching a show as it comes out every week isn't bad, but trying to watch a seasons worth of episodes in week - or however long I can rent them for – is a bit too much of a mission for me at the moment.

I was initially incredibly sceptical about the new spinoff Stargate: Universe, which appears Star Trek: Voyager with annoying twenty-somethings, which is particularly ironic since the 'younger and sexier' concept has already been mocked mercilessly by the original show. But then Robert Carlyle was cast and now I don't know what to think. I love Stargate, but it's not the kind of franchise that attracts people with Baftas. I'm worried the franchise may be a bit tired, and apparently Atlantis sucks this season, but then Unending happens to be one of my favourite episodes of television ever and that was the 214th and final episode of SG1, so maybe age has nothing to with the ability for good television. Potential there, maybe? I dunno.

Anyone know when Ashes to Ashes is going to start up again? It's been far too long since the last series ended.

I'm mostly bitter sad at Robert Carlyle going off and joining a TV show that isn't Doctor Who. And after people said he was unlikely to do TV because he was too famous!

I gave up on Heroes, but Micah will always have my affection, so yay!

I'm not a huge Robert Carlyle fan (I haven't really liked anything he's done since The Full Monty), but it is very surprising, particularly since Stargate doesn't exactly command the same level of respect or earn as many accolades as New Who does. And RTD had a few snarky words to say about it, so I do wonder if there were approaches made to Carlyle at one point.

Rumour has is that Monica will also be back. Those two were a highlight of season two, so I'm very happy.

Gaz is one of my all-time favorite movie characters, and I also really loved him in Angela's Ashes and he scared me cold in The Last Enemy, so...<3 And I wouldn't be surprised if he really was approached; those rumors about him as Eleven have been trickling around virtually since the start of David Tennant's run, to my memory. It is really odd that he would go for a lesser-lauded franchise, but *shrug* *bitter*

I didn't make it through s1, I dunno who Monica is. :/ Unless she was in s1 and I just forgot about her.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's was on the short list for Nine, Ten and the Master as well. While I don't like his role choices, he does have a mischievous quality that would make him a great candidate to play the Doctor.

She's Micah's adorable cousin and surrogate mum in season two with the power of adoptive muscle memory (what she sees, she can do), and wins for not only enjoying her power, but being the first person on the show to take to being a vigilante.

I stopped watching Heroes awhile ago, but everyone is telling me it's getting good again! May have to pick it up again.

I'm not sure if I'm going to watch Universe either! I will probably check it out sooner or later, but I'm not holding out that much hope. We'll see.

I feel obliged to warn you that while it got a bit good for the last two episodes of volume three, many of the episodes before that were far worse than anything season two produced and those two episodes weren't quite up to the end of season one standard. I know so many people who've given up on the show, I think as a person still watching that I'm the minority.

I'll probably decide on whether to watch Universe closer to airing, when there's trailers and a full cast - but I'm actually leaning towards giving it a shot at the moment.

Hey, you refriendalized me a while back and suddenly I realized that it might be considered polite to, you know, actually say something instead of hiding in the shadows like a shadow-hiding thing. So. HELLO! Thanks for the friend-back!

Daphne, Matt, and Ando is one of the greatest character groups I've ever seen. I think that this is something that Heroes does really well, when it does it - putting characters together in new and surprising ways. All the way back to Sylar and Mohinder in season 1, to Matt and Nathan and Mohinder-Matt-Molly in season 2... I'm quite looking forward to everyone being together next volume.
SELF-DEFENESTRATION SOVLES EVERYTHING

You are speaking of Ashes to Ashes the Life on Mars spin-off, yes? I just finished watching the latter, and think it is brilliant, but I'm a little, er, nonplussed as to how a furthering of that world could work, given the final revelation as to its nature. But I take it you think it's good enough, then?

Hi! Sorry it took so long, but I was away from a computer when you friended me.

Your totally right about Heroes' ability to create some awesome team-ups. It's one of the best things about the show. Although, I'm always a bit sad when the teams break up.

Ashes to Ashes is good. I highly recommend it. I was pretty skeptical about it at first as well, but it feels like a different show from Life on Mars, so it doesn't feel like you've seen it all before. And, in fitting with the ending, Alex has read Sam's psychological assessment - so it's not like she's retreading his motions. Instead, she thinks she knows the rules.

I had to give up on Heroes. It was driving me mental, with all the fail :( My flatmate said it has improved, so I may catch up.

Last I heard Ashes to Ashes was still filming, but I'm not sure...

Like the new layout, btw.

The last couple of episode went a long way towards fixing everything wrong with the season. Although, it'd have been better if they hadn't broken it in the first place.

I thought yesterday it was about this time last year that the first season started, but thinking about it, it was closer to February. So hopefully we'll have new episodes this time next month.

[livejournal.com profile] grrliz made the layout, and I think it's just gorgeous.
