At First I Was Afraid - I Was Petrified
Dec. 5th, 2007 10:31 pmAt one point in the episode I was sure Nathan was going to start singing that song.
Please let the writers strike end before next year. I can't bare the thought that I may not get to see Chapter Three until September 2008.
That was kind of dull. Then again, it was never intended to be a season finale, so I can forgive, particularly since I was one of the few who loved How to Stop and Exploding Man.
Nathan is totally not dead. I refuse to believe they’ve killed Nathan off. I want my wonderfully messed up Bennet-Petrelli family dinner, damn it. And more of the Pasdar hair.
My bet is that the unknown assassin was none other than HRG (cunningly disguised by wearing contacts and a hat). No idea whether it was Jack Coleman though, since the actor seemed to be a bit on the average height side, and JC is tall. Body double?
But wouldn’t it just be brilliant if it was, Bennet-Petrelli family drama wise. And oh, so evil and manipulative of Bob. Not only has Noah got his family’s safety as incentive to not run from the Company, but if it were to ever get out that he was the person who shot Nathan, it’s doubtful whether his family would welcome him back. Oh, Noah, you break my heart, in a good way.
Elle and Bob are now rivalling HRG and Claire for my favourite dad-daughter team. Except I want Elle to side with HRG against Bob, zap Bob and make his life generally a living hell. Though I don’t think Sylar’s going to let her live long enough to do that, what with her neat lightning, which is a shame because I really enjoy Elle, what with her being essentially an petulant spoilt eight year old with huge amounts of power trapped in a twenty-four year old’s body. Plus there’s so much potential with the HRG, Claire, Elle, Bob dynamic.
Bob got an HRG shot! It’s the duelling Dads with glasses! And Noah was totally Steve McQueen.
Oh, Angela. Please never change and never die.
Mylar never ceases to be amusing. Those two crazy kids.
I’ve decided I really like Maya. Her plot sucks, but the actress is appealing and imagine what she could do if she got control. Facing a crowd full of people about to jump you? Just get Maya to bring out her power and they’re all disabled. She just needs a decent plot, or, failing that, just give her a few scenes with HRG. Hey, it’s been statistically proven that putting a character with HRG automatically makes them 500 per cent more likeable, badass and/or interesting, see: Matt, Ted, West, Peter, Mohinder (sort of), Elle…
Dude, nobody got their shirts of in this episode. Surely they could have thought of at least one excuse to get Nathan shirtless, after all, this episode may be our last opportunity.
The scene with the Bennets needed to be at least two minutes longer. The way it was just didn’t cut it: “Hi, Claire-bear. You know how you scattered my ashes and cried? Well, I’m alive. No, it wasn’t a trick, your blood raised me from the dead. Now, you all keep you mouths shut while I walk out his door right now and go a work for the very people we’ve been running from and killed me. Okay, bye bye.” Hopefully they expand upon it in the next chapter.
West is gone. Why did West have to leave just when I was beginning to like him.
Hiro’s storyline was still yawn. So was Adam. They just didn’t sell his motivation. “Oh, Hiro, you stole the woman I loved for a whole five minutes. So now all humanity must die. Bwah ha ha ha ha.” Yawn.
On the other hand, Adam telling the story of Noah – foreshadowing? Particularly when coupled with Bob’s ‘there’s a storm coming’ in Out of Time. Do the elders know something about the future (again)? Or am I just grasping at straws while wondering why Bob’s gone out of his way to get HRG back in the fold of the Company, particularly given HRG wants to shoot Bob dead and destroy the Company, and that ain’t going to go away.
Peter still hasn’t convinced me of why he should live, other than by virtue of being part of the massively fucked up Petrelli clan.
I hope Niki’s not dead. She just begins to kick arse without Jessica or superpowers - and then she dies? That was not a good death. Noah had a good ‘death’, Nathan had good ‘death.’ Niki, not so much.
Micah’s power was pretty awesome. St Joan burnt, and Monica as St Joan nearly tied to a stake along with her. Bob told her to be amazing - does that make Bob God in this little tale?
And the next chapter: Villains. Yay! They sure have built up quite a varied rouges gallery for it. Sylar’s back, Company Man!HRG’s back, Manchurian Candidate!Angela is back, Elle’s capable of good but still essentially a brat, Bob’s ambiguous and banally evil, Matt’s headed down the road of his dear old Dad and I give Adam 5 episodes before he claws his way out of the ground using his fingernails.
So, the best two episodes of the first chapter/season where Company Man and Five Years Gone, and the best two of the second were Cautionary Tales and Out of Time. I think the lesson is that you can’t really go wrong with HRG-centric episodes and dark futures.

Date: 2007-12-05 12:36 pm (UTC)I thought the only glimpse we saw was the man walking away...wearing a Bennet-esque jacket. I agree totally that killing Nathan was the deal HRG made with Bob to get back to his family, since the Petrelli-self sacrifice gene was working overtime in both Claire and Nathan (and maybe Peter).
I didn't like Elle to begin with, but realizing she's a sociopath (and very different from Veronica Mars) has made me love her just a bit. Not as much as Claire, but still.
Also, that last scene with Adam? *shivers*

And there was the implication was that he was buried in Hiro's father's coffin. I mean, as if being an immortal being buried alive wasn't bad enough, he was in there with a corpse.

Date: 2007-12-05 06:41 pm (UTC)Ooooo... I like this! Also, I'm feeling incredibly dense for not having caught the St. Joan reference. That makes me feel a teensy bit better about the NOLA thugs going from snatching bookbags to committing arson and murder.
