Good new everyone, the BBC actually went and talked to Armando Iannucci about the future of The Thick of It and he said:

"I've got a storyline that will involve both sides - irrespective of what happens in the election,"

Y'all can go out and vote for whoever you like in the British election now (which of course you were going to do anyway), my favourite characters no longer have their fates quite so tied to it.

Anyway, meme time. I nicked this from [livejournal.com profile] alexiscartwheel

1. Choose 12 books that you like. (10 are books I like, 2 are sitting half-read next to my bed).
2. Write down the first sentence or so of each of those books.
3. Let other people try to figure out the titles.
4. Cross off books as they are guessed, let us know the correct answers and who guessed them.

1. “Some years ago there was in the city of York a society of magicians.” - Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, [livejournal.com profile] jadeddiva
2. “I have just returned from a visit to my landlord – the solitary neighbour that I shall be troubled with.” Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, [livejournal.com profile] alexiscartwheel
3. “Mr Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold scanty and embarrassed with discourse; backwards in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary and yet somehow loveable.” The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, [livejournal.com profile] erinpuff
4. “It was a nice day.” Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, [livejournal.com profile] airie_fairy
5. “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, [livejournal.com profile] jadeddiva
6. >“Left Munich at 8.35 p.m. On 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6.46, but train was an hour late.” Dracula by Bram Stoker, [livejournal.com profile] catslash
7. “There was once a young man who wished to gain his Heart's Desire.” Stardust by Neil Gaiman, [livejournal.com profile] erinpuff
8. “The hottest day of the summer was drawing to a close and the drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive.” Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling, [livejournal.com profile] airie_fairy
9. “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.” 1984 by George Orwell, [livejournal.com profile] grenadine
10. “When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off by sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere.”
11. “We slept in what had once been the gymnasium.” The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, [livejournal.com profile] grenadine
12. “The play – for which Briony had designed the posters, programmes and tickets, constructed the sales booth out of a folding screen tipped on its side, and lined the collection box in red crepe paper – was written by her in a two-day tempest of composition, causing her to miss a breakfast and a lunch.” Atonement by Ian McEwan, [livejournal.com profile] jadeddiva

I've been working on this fic for the [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon and I've gotten over my fear of writing in a new fandom, got most of the characters and tone right and pulled it back from being too talky (all my fics seem to start off with way too much dialog and I have to cut tonnes of it out). But somewhere along the way, it stopped being gen. Well, it's borderline, but since I'm pretty conservative in my definition of gen, I wouldn't be comfortable with it classifying it as such. It's not a problem, I can just post it outside of the ficathon, it's just amusing to me that it happened. I blame BSG and the insane level of UST between the political elite on the show and the love dodecahedrons.

Also: the trailer for The Lovely Bones has come out. To be honest, I haven't read the book, but I'm all kinds of excited because of the Peter Jackson factor. While I love the Lord of the Rings movies and thought King Kong was great, I actually think Peter Jackson is at his best mixing fantasy with period suburbia, like he did in Braindead, Heavenly Creatures and The Fighteners, and I'm really excited to see him return to that kind of film making.

And because I'm bored and coz I love making numbered lists:

Ask me my fannish Top Five [Whatevers]. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really. And I will answer them all in a new post.

It is so incredibly sad how Barack Obama's Grandmother has died just a day before the election.

You know how I was bitching about that movie that's used the Ka Mate haka? Well, the New Zealand news media's managed to catch on: Hollywood Hijacks Haka

And a meme snagged from [livejournal.com profile] artic_fox since I love doing numbered lists: Ask me for "top five" lists of pretty much anything, and I will list you my top five of that thing or things.

Heroes tomorrow! I'm excited!

I've decided that I've actually been a bit harsh on Heroes in recent months, because it struck me that in one respect it is the best show on TV. Of all the things I have watched and read in the past year and a bit which have killed off favourite characters, Heroes has done it the best. Cautionary Tales is the death to beat, and it would be even without the last minute resurrection and fanservice. There was quite a bit wrong with season two, but it was Bennet's Greek tragedy that gives me hope for the third series, because when the show is good, it can be brilliant.

It's that first sentence meme, nicked from a few people on my flist. Except I decided to post a bit more than the first sentence but rather a hefty chunk of couple of abandoned fics because having looked back on it, I like what I wrote and the fact that it shall never see the light of day saddens me a bit.

I don’t even like the Fifth Doctor that much and I’m still ridiculously excited about this. Multiple Doctors! Steven Moffat!

Comment and I'll pick seven of your icons, and then you will explain why you love/are using the icon (who doesn't love talking about their icons, seriously) and then post your explanation/this meme in your journal for other people to squee about their icons, and basically it will be a huge squee-fest of love and 100x100 square pixels.

Pierrepoint (otherwise known as the historically incorrect title of The Last Hangman) is a gem of a movie. It follows the career of Albert Pierrepoint, the UK’s most famous and efficient (seven seconds from leaving the cell to the pin being pulled) hangman, from his beginnings, to his trip to Germany to hand 200 Nazi war criminals to his retirement from the profession after twenty years. He’s in an interesting position, to some a national hero and to others a despised murderer. The subject matter is not for the faint hearted and it’s certainly not a light movie since what it is concerned with is how a person could kill people for a living and its effect on him and his wife. While you do see many people being executed, the story and direction tackles the deaths with the same care as the man himself would take.

Timothy Spall totally deserves an Oscar, he’s absolutely amazing throughout the entire movie. Juliet Stevenson who play’s his wife is brilliant as well, playing a character both supportive of her husband and willing to use his notoriety to improve their situation and at the same time deep down slightly disgusted.

Oddly enough, the bit where I sat there and thought “that couldn’t have possibly happened, they totally made that up for the movie” (you’ll know that bit when you watch it) turned out to be true. Anyway, brilliant movie. Go see it if you can.

I’ve done the ten songs meme. [livejournal.com profile] fishity gave me an S.

Shine on you Crazy Diamond – Pink Floyd
Starman – David Bowie
Saturated – Op-Shop
Sonnet – The Verve
Space Dementia – Muse
Suddenly I See – K T Tunstall
She Will Have Her Way – Neil Finn
Sweet Dreams – The Eurythmics
Sex and Candy – Marcy Playground
Supersystem – The Feelers

If you want a letter, leave a comment and I’ll give one to you.

[livejournal.com profile] jadeddiva tagged me and tracking down pictures turned out to be an incredibly enjoyable use of a couple of hours. Best. Meme. Ever? I think so.

1. List 5 celebrities you would have sex with without even asking questions.
2. Put all of them IN ORDER of your lust for them. (5 - 1, 1 is the hottest.)
3. Say which movie/show/thing it was that hooked you.
4. Supply photos for said people.
5. Tag five people!

I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] jadeddiva and who can resist the awesome power of the tag when combined with the opportunity to pimp oneself out.

WRITER'S MEME: Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of the top five favorite fics you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

Unravelling Every Remus/Tonks writer has a “Remus and Tonks get together” fic and a “Remus dumps Tonks and runs off to spy on Greyback fic” and this is mine. Except I decided to be different by taking an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind approach and deliver it in a non-linear fashion with two strands, one working forward in time and the other working backwards. It took me four months to be satisfied with it enough to post it I’m still immensely proud I managed to pull that off. Warning to those that click to read: It badly needs a re-beta.

Walking Down Corridors I love the hook. Not sure if it worked at getting people to read it, but I still love the opening line. I’m also proud of my characterisation of Narcissa and Bellatrix, particularly of Narcissa. I wanted her to be a character readers could both hate and empathise with at the same time, just as I was doing while writing it.

The Illusion of Whole You know me and my obsession with exploring the consequences of actions taken in war (I’ve always viewed this fic in that way as a thematic sequel to Ghosts in the Interrogation Room) well this is where I think I pulled it off the best and I managed to combine it with the more personal idea of two people trying to hold on to a dead relationship. But the reason I love this is because I think of all the fics I’ve written, I think the emotions in this are the most real.

Absence and Memory (for some reason I keep on wanting to type that absinthe and memory). I love this because it’s got Elizabeth loving Norrington without her feelings for Will (and thus canon) being sacrificed. I love it because it’s got Norrington’s feeling expressed even though he barely does or says anything and isn’t even in half of it. But most of all I love it because it’s got every reason why I love Elizabeth/Norrington, because it’s repressed, unspoken love, because it’s steeped in misunderstanding as a result and because it’s ultimately doomed.

The Truth of the Matter Essentially Truth is very simple, it’s the same story told three different times in one conversation. I love working with the misunderstandings and prejudices people hold about each other and also the way a different conclusion can be reached from the same information presented in a slightly different way and I think this fic really delves into it better than any other time fic I’ve written using the same device. And I adore it because it’s both funny and bittersweet, that it’s the only time I’ve been really satisfied with Norrington’s voice and because I managed to hassle the “Jack Sparrow is God’s gift to women” idea.

I hate tagging (brings back bad memories of primary school PE class team selection) so feel free to take this off me or request to be tagged.

I’ve seen this meme around where you post the first sentence of the first piece of fanfiction you have posted each month and I thought it would be interesting to do it. If anything it has exposed my habit of starting of stories with the name of a character. I seem to have given it up in recent months though.

January – “Junior Auror Nymphadora Tonks took a deep breath as she entered the room.” – Auror Disciplinary Committee Case 1229.

February – “Buckbeak always thought of himself as special.” – Vanity, Thy Name is Hippogriff

March – “The old suitcase sitting in the corner caught Tonks' eye as she headed for the bathroom.” Unravelling

April – “Kingsley Shacklebolt leaned his knuckles on the table before him, purposely towering over the smaller man sitting across the table.” Ghosts in the Interrogation Room

May – “Neville Longbottom poked his spoon at his porridge, lifting out a large portion.” – Growing

June – “The last thing Remus decided he needed today was being forced to show a teenager the ropes.” - The Ropes

July – “It seemed to Tonks that there existed two parallel Londons.” - Prisoners of War

August – “What is the point of killing Molly Weasley, I wonder while I glance at my sister’s grinning face.” - Walking Down Corridors

September – “From his spot underneath a tree, Harry watched Ron emerge from around the side of the Burrow.” – Two Snitch-Brained Idiots

October – “For all the noise the waves made crashing against the side of the Dauntless, for all the roars of thunder and claps of lightning, for all the desperate screams and yells from the unfortunate men cast into the unforgiving sea, in the depth below the waves it was silent.” – Penance More Will Do

November – Didn’t actually post any new fic other than some chapters of Growing.

December – “Being women of business, it was only natural for the Tortuga whores to take an active interest in the fortune of the local pirates.” - The Truth of the Matter (I haven’t actually posted this yet, but it's not far off being posted I don’t think the first line is going to change between now and then.)

The Bunker

I laid into Talos the Mummy yesterday and I was expecting The Bunker to be not brilliant either considering IMDb gave it a 5.4. However, you all have to watch this movie, whether you are a Jack Davenport fangirl or not. It's one of the best psychological horror movies I've ever seen and also deals with those moral issues that surround war that I seem to write about a lot.

It's about nine German solders trapped in an anti-tank bunker in 1944 as the American forces are coming up on their position. Their only possibly way out is a series of tunnels from which the horror arises.

Jack Davenport is of course in it, and rather Scruffington-esq in attitude. I want to say more, but you will not want to be spoiled. And in the special feature he says those magical words that every girl wants to hear (or maybe it's just me): “I read a book...”

And I did the interest collage meme.

I have to spend my day packing and cleaning, so amuse me by trying to answer this. Some of them should be dead easy, but a lot you will probably have to guess.

1.Post a list of 10 books/movies/TV shows that you've had a fannish love of at some time in your life.
2. Have your friends guess your favorite character from each one.
3. You can cross out the show/movie/book and put the character when someone guesses.

1. Harry Potter
2. Stargate SG-1
3. The West Wing
4. House MD Robert Chase
5. Grey's Anatomy
6. Justice League
7. Animorphs (many, many years ago that was)
8. Pirates of the Caribbean James Norrington
9. Dr. Who
10. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell

With JKR’s revelation about character death I was making a mental list of characters that cannot die or I will cry. So far JKRs only killed of characters I’ve been indifferent about, Sirius and Dumbledore never really appealed to me and though I cried in the movie, I never felt I got attached enough to Cedric to feel bad for him when reading GoF.

Of course that had all changed now I’ve started writing fic. I’ve written from the perspective of Tonks, Remus, Peter, Molly, Kingsley, Snape, Narcissa and Neville, and I will be devastated if one of them were to bite it. Even Peter and Narcissa, who I don’t particularly like but still emphasise with. Though, to be honest, I wouldn’t care much if Snape died. However I want him to survive to antagonise Harry.

Though coming back to what I was on about. I think one out of Ron, Hermione, Luna, Ginny and Neville is going to be killed, somebody close to Harry and about his age and he cares about. Thinking about this, I came to the realisation that I no longer like Hermione. This is rather sad since I used to like her a lot. But I think a combination of movie PinkPowerRanger!Hermoine, bad Hermione/Snape fics where she treats Harry and Ron like crap and the huge amounts of wank surrounding Hermione pairings has really left a bad taste in my mouth for the character.

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LiveJournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

1. Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here
2. Goo Goo Dolls – Iris (anyone heard the remake by that guy from boyzone? Why? Why?)
3. The Rolling Stones – You Can’t Always Get What You Want
4. Gnarls Barkley – Crazy
5. Anna Nalick – Breathe
6. David Bowie – Life of Mars (had the weirdest dream featuring this song a few days ago).
7. Sarah McLaughlin – Stupid

I like being tagged but suck at tagging, so tell me if you want to be tagged.
