I Finally Got An Ashes to Ashes Icon

meddowWell, I was disappointed. We had that awesome cliff-hanger last season, but the pay-off was confusing at best and at worst seems to pointed to the writers having no clue what they're doing. She was back in the 1980s, no explanation given and within ten minutes. This show has a terrible flaw in that it's torn between being this awesome twisty science fiction show and a police procedural, the first genre needs the show to play with the status quo in order to be fantastic, the later genre is a slave to the status quo. The writers don't seem to be able to overcome this problem.
What really annoys me is that they seem to have swept Molly under a carpet. Alex did all that fighting over two seasons to get back to her daughter, only for Molly not to show up at all in '2008' (if it is 2008), and for Alex to decide to work through things in that time period without Molly. I think they're going for a LoM ending with Alex choosing to stay in 1983 with Gene et al, which is something I've been 'do not want' since the beginning. It was fine for Sam, he had no dependants, but Alex does, and no sending Molly to her father will undo the rage having a mother choose Gene over her daughter would make me feel if they do go down that route.
Dear writers, prove me wrong.

The good was that the mystery this year seems to involve Sam, and actually seems to be setting Gene up as a murderer, either of Sam or of the dead cop they've dug up in Lancashire that had a bullet in his face. Best part of the mystery is that Daniel Mays' character has not been set up to be somebody we're rooting against, he's actually quite likeable, so we're not automatically on Gene's side. Anyway, dead cop seemed to have a 1950s or 1960s uniform, so it could have been something Gene was involved with very early in his career.
We also seem to have gotten some development. Gene's trusting Shaz more, Ray got a promotion. Still, all seems to have been forgiven for Chris after last season. Ray fell back into his old role in the gang pretty quickly.
Finally, I want Alex's blue heels.
