Well Familiar Debate has blown my theory on what gets read and reviewed and what does not out of the water. It’s got no plot. It’s gen. It’s Percy, Bill and politics and challenges the view that the Ministry is teh evil. It should have not gotten more than five reviews tops even though I pimped the hell out of it (it currently sitting on 12, which is more than Hostile Takeover has on LJ, hence my shock). I should give up theorising on fanfiction because I’m obviously way off.

Though I still maintain you can use international relations theory to explain fandom.

ETA: I’ve been watching a lot of Hornblower lately (it’s about the British Navy, is anyone surprised that I like it). I hadn’t seen the earlier episodes (films? They’re nearly two hours long) in a long while. Damn I love it. Does make me wonder if the people who read Harry Potter and say the slash is so blatant have ever seen Hornblower. Now there the slash is practically canon, it's great. Anyway, all those people into Norrington at the moment, I reckon you should give it a watch if you haven't already. There's much more detail of Navy life than Master and Commander

My two most popular fics are both gen. Go figure. I think so much of it has to do with luck and timing and just general fandom vibe at the time.

Plus, your fic was a really involving and well-written and had a strong central concept.

Well, my general idea had been that writers got pegged by fandom for writing certain genres. I thought that I had been pegged as a Remus/Tonks writer and nothing else I could write, like gen, would ever be as popular. Obviously not. Though it’s brilliant for me since I think I'll be writing a lot more gen in the future.

But I agree now: luck, timing and the will of fandom. I wish there was a bit more to it than that.

I've been a fan of Hornblower for ages -- since it first aired in the US -- about 10 yrs ago? Why do you think I'm so mad about this gorgeous creature? *points to icon and drools*

It's a brilliant series! :)

I had no idea that Jamie Bamber was on Battlestar Galactica until a few days ago when I looked him up on IMDb. If I had known earlier I would have been tuning in.

But what with Ioan Gruffudd, Paul McGann and Robert Linsday as well, Hornblower really spoils a girl for choice.

You definitely should check it out. Apollo is a totally different person than Archie Kennedy but definitely great to watch. Especially when just dressed in a strategically placed towel The third season of BSG is starting in the US in about a month -- there's a catch up special that's being aired here. If you'd like, I can try to upload it for you. The best thing to do is rent the entire series from the start (or join [livejournal.com profile] bsg_eps. It's worth it.

I love all three of those men equally! Been a Robert Lindsay fan forever but in costume? YUMMY! I think there is HH slash floating around out there but I've never tried to find it.

I think I'm going to have to rent. What with my Jack Davenport obsession I'm already pushing my montly download limit. Though I think the show has been reasonably popular in New Zealand, so I shouldn't have a problem finding them.

Definitely start with the mini series and go forward. I'd tried to watch the series from the first episode without seeing what had gone before and I couldn't get into it. When I got the Season 1 set with the mini series last January and started from the very beginning, an obession was born. There's also added incentive several other gorgeous men including James Callis, Tahmoh Pennikett (I hope I spelled it right), Michael Trucco and Aaron Douglas. :) Plus some amazing writing and storytelling.

I love Jack too -- mostly due to Coupling. I still have to watch Ultra Violet. I've had it on dvd for over a year and still haven't had a chance to sit down and watch. *blushes*

It starts off a little slow but I promise, the storyline sneaks up on you and then you're hooked for life. Well, at least I was. :)

How mad - I just this second finished watching the second series finale of BSG and then read this thread!

Jack Davenport? Never sexier than as Miles in This Life.

No BSG icon yet so next best thing will have to be futuristic Green Wing.

That's Green Wing? I haven't seen that episode. Doesn't look like one I should miss though.

I haven't managed to get round to watching This Life yet, I'm still working my way through Coupling

Green Wing - Series 2, Ep. 1. Ah - Mac, Mac, Mac... He'd make a great Weasley. Charlie I think.

This Life - oooh you have treats in store!
