Cops Behaving Badly
Nov. 4th, 2007 11:02 pmI’ve been meaning to watch Life on Mars for ages, ever since I first heard there was a time travelling cop show named after my favourite Bowie song. But up until this point TV schedules have conspired against me and until now I’ve been unable to get my hands on the DVDs. However, I finally got around to it today and having now watched the first six episodes of the first series and I am in love.
It’s just so hilariously funny, and one of those blink and you’ll miss the line kinds of funny which I love. Sam and Gene have to be the best duo on television, though Gene alone is worth the price of admission. Annie wins for being smart and so darn cute she reminds me of Sarah Jane Smith (same time period probably helps). There’s a message all the way through about the challenges female police officers had to face at the time, and it’s done with subtlety. Subtlety people! Having been watching Robin Hood for the past few months, I forgot television shows are every now and again capable of such a feat. And I constantly want to hug Skelton for being well-meaning, if a bit thick sometimes. Oh, and the soundtrack. I love the soundtrack.
I’m desperately trying to remain unspoiled, but I need to know so if you can tell me without spoiling it for me, please do: is the second series as good? Plus, I’ve heard Chris Chibnall has written for the show, and, well, I’ve seen Cyberwoman and no matter what I do, I can't get that hour of my life back or purge the memory of it from my brain, or bring myself to watch another episode of Torchwood.
And an American version? Why? For every Office there about nine Couplings, Viva Laughlins and Red Dwarfs. When will people learn?

Date: 2007-11-04 12:39 pm (UTC)As regards to Chibnall, the episode he wrote for the second series (Ep 2) is good, I think, but I'm not terribly fond of the one he wrote for the first series (Ep 7). But nothing approaching Cyberwoman, honestly.
