70s Gene Strikes Back

Ashes to Ashes is really starting to get to me. If Alex’s attempts at saving her parents are as successful as Sam’s attempts at preventing his Dad from walking out were, then my favourite character’s going to die in a ball of flames next week. Yes, I adore Caroline Price: she’s manipulative, professional, ambitious, adulterous, flawed as a mother but caring nevertheless, strangely tolerant of Alex and out to destroy a corrupt regime that includes both Margaret Thatcher and Gene Hunt.
Of course I love Gene, but he does desperately need to be kicked around by a lawyer, particularly with the return of violent and corrupt LoM Gene. And the return of Gene the bastard is welcome from me. With Sam and Annie gone, and Alex not being an easy character to like, I think he had been softened quite a bit, which I think you can only put down to years of working with Sam having an effect. But it’s nice to have him back, and dragging Chris and Ray down with him, particularly since it puts a major spanner into the works when it comes to Alex/Gene – I’m not sure if the show would work if they actually got together and after last week, it was looking like that would happen very shortly. Plus I think one of the interesting things about Gene is that he does have that violent side.
I was a bit miffed at Sharon’s miraculous recovery. I know it was important for Alex to have control, but dying was the most interesting thing Sharon had done so far in the series, and the show’s never killed off anyone important before and I though it was great it was delving into new territory.
Though we have now definitely established that freaky Bowie clown is in fact the angel of death or grim reaper.
And I am so glad I’m one of the few people I know without a crush on Matthew Macfadyen, because otherwise that haircut probably would have made me cry.
