(Actually, Gene Hunt probably would. Sam Tyler certainly wouldn't).

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry: the American version of Life on Mars

[Poll #1187588]

In something far better, there is a Martha/Donna community, [livejournal.com profile] be_my_luckystar.
The name refers to the fact that the ship name is Madonna. Which does pose the question, what would the Doctor/Donna ship name be? Donna? Doctor?

Finally, A ship impervious to squished up ship names.

*cries*

*keeps crying*

*hasn't managed to stop yet*

Donnor? Like...like the reindeer? Though I think they're just The Doctordonna now.

*weeps*

I would join you in sobbing if I wasn't still giggling hysterically at the initial shock of it.

I do like the DoctorDonna - it's a name and a theme song.

"and a theme song."

...omg you're right. That didn't quite click at first but...dude. XD

H'lo there, I'm a bit of a lurker, but I was lured out of the woodwork by your poll and linkage. Thanks for that, I'd been wondering what American Sam and Gene would look like.

So far my take on it is: a less gritty, bit shinier, with no cool accents, a nicer Gene and complete scene duplication. I think all this = epic fail on America's part.

And why is present day Sam working in a concrete bunker?

Hi! That opening in the bunker had me wondering if I'd clicked the wrong link and the promo was actually for 24.

It is rather epic fail. Really, if they wanted to make an American version, they should have taken the time-travelling cop concept and invented their own characters.

Thing is, doesn't Journeyman sort of cover those bases? And wasn't that canceled? *shakes head* those execs really don't know what they're doing.

Luckily, they've apparently realized how shit the show is and have decided to completely recast (except for Sam, which I think is a mistake since the actor's just too burly) and retool the pilot. I think even the producer's abandoned the project. It's all shaping up to be a guaranteed recipe for disaster.

Yeah, I was thinking "isn't this trailer already obsolete?" And YES, that actor is too burly. And stiff, from the trailer's indication.

Why put out a redundant trailer? I just do not comprehend the way they go about making American TV. I think I should just be thankful we somehow got The West Wing out of that system.

Gene is supposed to tower over Sam, and it looks like it would be way too hard to find anyone to outbulk Jason O'Mara.

Retooling sounds very ominous - it also makes it sounds like it could actually beat the Blackpool remake's record from airing to axing (if it gets an airing).

I think it's not airing until spring '09. A lot can change between now and then. But in any case, the Blackpool record is not one you'd want to beat.

Also, iconlove! I need a Coupling icon... and a Blackpool one come to think...

They already recast everything? So... why did they bother with a trailer at all?

And I agree that Sam is too burly. It's like they're trying to say "Look, he is a tough, manly detective." But wouldn't we just have two Gene Hunts then?

I think they made the decision to recast after shooting the pilot and compiling the trailer. Here's the article (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news08/080510c.php) talking about it.

*shrugs* it's still complete bollocks to me.

man, having seen the trailer now, I am 100% convinced that LoM: US is going to suck massively. I adore Colm Meaney but...no. Just NO! Annie looks like a hooker, Sam looks like a construction worker, and everything just looks like crap. *grumble grumble*

I like Madonna for Martha/Donna. For Doctor/Donna all I can think of is Docna. Or Donnor. Or DoctorDonnaFriend! :)

Now, now, US Life on Mars does have great potential as fodder for a drinking game. And I'm sure we can all have fun taking bets on whether it will last longer before cancellation than the Blackpool remake ;)

Donnor seems to be a popular suggestion. And I do love how the Ood are all Doctor/Donna shippers.

LMAO I forgot about that. I think it lasted two weeks. Which was slightly less time than Coupling US.

Heh the Ood clearly have good taste!

Actually I think it was less. They aired the pilot and the next day it was canceled. I remember getting whiplash from the speed at which they did it.

I've never seen the original, sadly, and had no interest in the US version, even with Hugh Jackman, but it was cancelled before I could even consider it! I thought it lasted 2 episodes but you're prolly right!

Oh but the original is all kinds of brilliant. Any show that gives us the amazing combination of David Morrisey and David Tennant dancing to Blondie is def FTW.

It weren't Blondie, it were Nancy Sinatra! In that icon's case, at least. (I couldn't find myself able to finish the thing, so I can't speak for eps 5 or 6.)

I couldn't even finish watching the trailer I thought it was so awful. A big DO NOT WANT from me.

I think if I get very drunk before watching it, I could find it amusing. But yes, a big DO NOT WANT from me as well.

I saw that yesterday and was horrified! WHY, ABC, WHY?

Do they realize that it's NOT a 70s buddy cop comedy? Not that Life on Mars wasn't funny sometimes, but it was also really, really dark. And it didn't have some chessy faux-70s soundtrack. What the hell happened to David Bowie??

Yet another example of the networks assuming that all US television viewers are stupid. Gah. I don't think it'll steal the short lived title from Viva Laughlin, though. It's hard to be that bad.

Anyway, um... happier things. Madonna is kind of hilarious, though as a general rule I think mashed up ship names are silly.

I doesn't even seem to be a buddy comedy - well I didn't find it funny at all. Though at least they decided the US audience was smart enough to keep the title even without the Bowie.

As a general rule I think those ship names are silly as well, with the exception of the rare amusing ones such as Madonna.
