SJA I Love You So
Sep. 8th, 2008 06:52 pmIt's been posted around quite a bit, but if you happen to have missed it: The Sarah Jane Adventures Season Two trailer featuring loads of Clyde (hooray for their being more of Clyde! He's my favourite of the trio and he was sadly given very little attention last season).
I feel I haven't said it in a good six months, so I shall say it again: I freaking love this show. If it were a person I'd hug it and ruffle its hair and buy it chocolate and never ever let it go because it's just so very earnest and hopeful and cute.
You've got the three teens, reminiscent of the Harry Potter trio but without horrifically wanky ship wars and Emma Watson bringing them down. You've got Maria, the mini!Sarah, Luke who's so adorakable he could be the Tenth Doctor's son (those two need to meet – that moment in JE was not enough) and Clyde, who's sits at the half way point between Mickey and Captain Jack with maybe a smidgen of Donna.
And then there's Sarah. It could have been so easy for them to have Sarah in the Obi Wan role of dispensing wise advice to her protégés, but instead she's the main character and a considerable amount of the stories have her struggling with something; whether it's her sudden motherhood, getting older, or, you know, fighting aliens and saving the planet. In fact, one of the main themes seems to be that adults are just as confused and unsure about life as teenagers, which is really quite refreshing. And it's just so good seeing an Old School companion get the new series treatment of having her life pre-Doctor fleshed out and getting character development. One of the best bits of JE was Sarah's comment about the Doctor having such a huge family – it also perfectly summed up the message of the first series of SJA.
I do really hope that is the back of David Tennant's head that has been spotted. Such a shame they didn't show the Brigadier or Mrs Wormwood. I'm really curious about how Maria's going to be written out and the introduction of Rani.
Although while I'm excited about all those characters coming and going and guest-staring, The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith is the episode I'm most looking forward to. I does look like it could be rip off of Father's Day, but I have a considerable faith in the SJA writers and I don't think it is. The title implies the episode is about making the decision, whereas in Father's Day Rose made the decision without thinking of the consequences before the opening theme rolled and the rest of the episode was about the repercussions.

Date: 2008-09-08 07:07 am (UTC)Rumour has it that Maria and Alan are "moving abroad" after the first story (I think it's at the end of the first two-parter, not at the end of the second story -- I heard they're in 'two episodes'). I just hope the door is left open for the Jacksons to come back. I love them so much...and the rumours about DT surfacing have been around since the end of S4 so I'm hoping they're true. if not, we still have the Brig and Sontarans and Ms Wormwood!
Oh -- and LOL about the HP comparison. You're so right. and funnily enough, Yasmin was in Ballet Shoes with Emma Watson
and her amazing eyebrows. I haven't watched it but apparently Yasmin blows Emma out of the water acting-wise. Not a shock!no subject
Date: 2008-09-08 07:17 am (UTC)I hope they're writing them leaving in a way that could have them return. Yasmin Page is a great young actress and I'd love to see Maria get a spin in the TARDIS on day. Particularly if she brings Clyde and Luke along too. Or even better: Alan (the Doctor travelling with his Companion's Dad would be hilarious).
I not sure if I could bring myself to watch Ballet Shoes. That's two beloved characters from books I like that Emma Watson has played now. However, the presence of YP and Emilia Fox does make it rather tempting.

Date: 2008-09-08 07:20 am (UTC)I've heard that they are leaving the door open for Maria to come back. I adore Maria so yeah, I want to see her again (and that hottie dad of hers...*sigh*). I'm hoping that it really is because of Yasmin's school work/exams and no problems with her. Plus...ALAN! Rani looks to be a great character and I love the actress who plays her mum, but the Jacksons hold a special place in my heart.
I loved Ballet Shoes as a kid, so I'm torn too. I'm afraid to see what Madam Eyebrows is going to do to it. But I also want to see Yasmin so...yeah. I didn't know Emilia Fox was in it too. I love her. :)
ETA: Oh! I just saw the screen caps from the trailer on DWF and at 52/53 seconds in, there is definitely a back of a head what looks like it belongs to the Scottie Hotty Totty. Someone even put together a little photo montage of DT's head from various angles and..yeah, it looks convincing to me. Plus there've been rumours for quite some time so fingers x'd that the Doctor and Luke will get to have another encounter. (Personally, I would pay huge sums of money to see an actual DW/SJA episode where the Doctor got to hang out/work with Sarah Jane and Luke for an entire story without anyone else except maybe Clyde and/or Maria or Rani.)

Date: 2008-09-08 09:42 am (UTC)A DW/SJA crossover episode would be brilliant. Although I'd want Chrissie and Alan to be around if he's going to guest of SJA - just because there has got to be a great joke to be had out of Luke and Ten's similarities, Sarah's status as a single Mum and Chrissie's ability to get the wrong impression. And Alan getting a little jelous of the Doctor would be fabulous.

Date: 2008-09-09 03:03 am (UTC)I'll be sad to see Alan and Maria leave, though. I was very impressed with Yasmin Page, so I hope they leave it open for her to return at some point.
That'll be pretty exciting if the Doctor really does appear in an episode! In season 1, I really like that Sarah Jane actually talked about the Doctor since here experiences with him were so important to getting her to where she is now. Jack's always irritatingly coy about the Doctor on Torchwood.

Date: 2008-09-09 08:33 am (UTC)It does seem that SJA is much more embracing of Doctor Who than Torchwood is, and it seems to be at times to be more willing to talk about events of the Classic Series than the New Series seems to be. Although, now we've had Ianto and Gwen chatting with the Doctor, I think Jack's going to be much less coy.
