So Basically, Little Pleases Me More Than Hugh Laurie As A Fop

Number list of mostly random but sometimes related thoughts time!

1. The other day I was thinking about who in RTD's Who universe, the same ideas keep on being used throughout with new spins on them (for example, the idea behind Father's Day was used in Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane, and that evolved into Turn Left, or the repeating motif of the bride, and something occurred to me: Donna has got to play a role in the resolution (or why bring her back). Now Jack scarified his grandson to save the Earth. I doubt the Doctor would ever, ever activate Donna's memories and thus sacrifice her life, to save the planet (although he may consider it), but what about Wilf?

2. Watched V and was really disappointed. The buzz coming out of comicon was that it was brilliant, but the dialogue was appalling at times, the characters really thin and the whole thing was executed with the subtly of an anvil (it really doesn't get more heavy handed than a crucifix falling over and shattering as the space ship enters orbit). Plus it felt so rushed.

3. The latest episode of House was also disappointing. Although is about time the writers managed to find an excuse to get Hugh Laurie back in a period costume.

4. In other Hugh Laurie-as-the-Prince-Regent related win: I cannot believe I did not know of the existence of this Annie Lennox music video until a couple of days ago. Though really, who would pick John Malkovich over Hugh Laurie?

5. I miss Blackadder.

6. I've really gotten into FlashForward after the last episode. But then, how could I not with the casting that show has. Last episode had Sulu, Shakespeare and River Song investigating some crazy nihilist cult lead by Leoben. Not to mention, the huge disaster at the heart of it was apparently caused by the alliance of Meriadock Brandybuck and Steve from Coupling.

7. A trailer for Invictus has been released which is a movie I really want to see for many reason, rugby being one of the few sports I will actually watch on occasion, and I do remember watching that particular World Cup match when I was a kid (of course, I was cheering for the other team, and it will be interesting to see how the media in NZ covers the movie since it's widely believed that the All Blacks were deliberately poisoned before that match). I really want to see some day a movie made about another the 1981 Springbok Tour of New Zealand, which was another time rugby and apartheid mixed. I just think the mixture of the two teams playing against each other against the violence between police and rioters outside the stadiums would make for an awesome sports movie. That's me though, if I made a sports movie it wouldn't be feel good flick, it would be about violence, politics, racism and New Zealand's screwed up national psyche.

8. Finally, I have developed a crush on David Strathairn. Is that weird?

OMGs, is that a Passion Fish icon? I love that movie. In fact, that and Matewan and my post-BSG rental stalking of Mary McDonnell are the origin on the David Strathairn crush.

Forgot to add, the origin of my crush was actually The River Wild with Meryl Streep, but then I saw Good Night, Good Luck and it turned into an obsession. Also, he's been my mental choice for Remus Lupin ever since I read the train scene in Prisoner of Azkaban. Literally from the first moment - tired, disheveled, a touch of gray in his hair and looking older than his years (although in DS's case, it's looking much younger than he really is which makes him look like Remus to me)

I've thought of him as Remus since 1999 - for 10 years he's been my Remus :)

That diffident, wise way that he has, and his voice - gravelly and a little hoarse... not to mention his incredibly sexy, long-fingered hands.. ... .. ahem, sorry, what was I saying again?

There's a fan site, http://www.david-strathairn.com/ that has some lovely pics of him, as well as all the latest news. He narrates the audiobook of Mystic River, if you like his voice. It's a good book too, if you like gut-wrenching mysteries.

Damn. My library's audio copy of Mystic River is narrated by some other actor I've never heard of. That's a great website though.

And I'm now completely hung up on the unfairness of David Strathairn not getting to be Remus Lupin. I wonder if he can find another role as a wise-but-timid, tired werewolf mentor.

#2 - I'm not liking V very much either. I just don't find any of the characters or the plot particularly interesting. Maybe it's because I really liked the original V (well, the mini-series anyway) and in comparison this version takes itself way too seriously.

I don't really want to think about #1. :(

#6 - I've only seen the first two eps of FlashForward yet, but the cast is amazing. I love it.

I haven't seen the original so I've only been comparing it to BSG (since it was touted as the next-BSG) and thus far it falls short by a lot. I think you're right, it does take itself too seriously. That wouldn't be a bad thing if the writing was brilliant, but the writing's not good enough.

3) All I want is a clip of the last scene. That's all. I don't wanna have to watch the whole thing just for that, especially not with Lucas downgraded from awesome friend to In The Way Of ~Romance~.

Yeah, really the only point to the episode besides the endless annoying Huddy plotline non-development and that Wilson plot which shall probably never be mentioned again was that last scene, which shall hopefully lead to the Chase storyline returning to prominence.

It is a bit bizarre. I kind of want to know the thought process that went into making it. Annie Lennox or the director must be a Blackadder fan.
