So much love.

I’m reviewing both, because I was busy last week so decided it might be easier just to do them both a once, so I watched them both together.

Firstly, the characters were just brilliant. Every one of them well rounded, with flaws and strengths. Even Hutchinson, who seemed to be a generic bully in the Human Nature, was a rounded, believable character in the end.

Martha as a character at her best is at her best when she’s on her own and taking no crap and there was plenty of this those moments through the episode. She really got to shine in the standoff. Though I am a bit disappointed the crust has been allowed to continue, I do think it will bog the character down.

Oh, John Smith, I adore you so. Kind and with a head in the clouds, but wise enough to know that the thing so many would want, immortality, is not a blessing and that the greatest thing he could wish for was a simple life. I wanted to smack Ten just for being Ten and not John when he showed up at the end.

And Joan. Oh, Joan. So incredibly believable in that she could not believe Martha was a doctor due to the times in which she lived, but open minded and intelligent enough to listen to Martha, and she got to take control. I think it is wonderful how both Martha and Joan got to shine.

While I think her reasons for saying no are good, but I so wish she had said yes. I can’t say how brilliant I thought it was that they had cast Jessica Haynes (and I think anyone who has seen Bob and Rose probably thought the same too) and she was amazing. I know it’s a long shot, but I really hope we see her again, or at least she gets a mention or just a shout out in the future. Maybe the journal could end up in Sarah Jane’s attic, just something.

Little girls with balloons had never been so creepy. Baines was so very creepy, and played brilliantly by the actor.

Though speaking of the bad guys, I though the punishment of them at the end was a bit WTF. The narration broke up flow of the episode and where was Martha during all this? Why did she just stand back and let Ten be so terrible in his wrath? Probably would have been better just to blow them up.

I loved the overall feel of the episode. The scarecrow attack actually reminded me very much of Pyramids of Mars. Same thereabouts time period and John touting a rifle like Sarah did back in the day, and the scarecrows did remind me a lot of the mummies. And then when they started bombarding, it had a very War of the Worlds feel to it. I just loved it.

The war message was done very nicely, if a bit heavy handed at times it’s a good message so I’ll forgive. Both criticising the senselessness by illustrating the tragedy of the act, while celebrating the courage of the solders involved. I really hit home why the Doctor is such a pacifist (but the way Ten treated the Family of Blood makes me think he use a talking too by Joan and John).

And the slight Nine in Parting of the Ways was love (oh, Nine *sniff*)

I wonder what’s going to happen the journal. I think everyone in fandom really wants to get their hands on it. Maybe the BBC should raffle it off and give the proceeds to charity, to Sudan maybe. I’d buy a ticket.

And next week: Moffat!
