Nuns and Bondage

Best thing about this episode: Sarah Jane’s completely blasé attitude to once again being tied up and scarified (somebody need to do a running count of how many times that’s happened to her). I half expected her to come out with - “What? No torture? – Amateurs.” Really though, once the G-rated bondage happens, you know you’re watching Classic Who. And SJA is just so Classic Who in a way the new series just isn’t. Then again Sarah’s a character from the classic series so really, it’s more of a Classic Who spin off than a New Who spin off anyway.
Poor petrified Alan. The tear scene - the idea that he was aware - was heart-wrenching. He can probably relate the Weeping Angels.
I want to know what happened to all those nuns. There’s humour fic in Sarah trying to figure out what to do with a group of formerly possessed sisters.
I think RTD could learn a bit about the restraint this episode showed. There was no magical cure to Alzheimer’s and there was no scene of the statue garden coming to life. Those people died. None of those New Earth type endings. Maria and Alan were very lucky. The show has got the balance of optimism and cold hard reality just right, I think. And I liked how the Doctor reference was subtle. No ‘no other man could compare’ stuff.
It was great that Maria got to shine. She got these two episodes, Luke got the first two - I really hope Clyde gets to shine in the next.
And of course, gorgeous cute moments galore: Luke having complete faith in his mother, Clyde having faith in Luke, Bea telling Maria she’ll find herself someone to share it with, Sarah giving Chrissie her innocent face. This show is just so incredibly charming.
Though really, chanting? Chanting never comes off well, not when they’re chanting in English anyway. They should have had the nuns chanting in Greek or Latin or not at all.

I was slightly irritated though that Alan didn't seem to remember any of what happened to him, or seeing aliens or strange technology or anything. I want him to be in the know! *is evil Sarah/Alan shipper*
