I don’t even like the Fifth Doctor that much and I’m still ridiculously excited about this. Multiple Doctors! Steven Moffat!

Comment and I'll pick seven of your icons, and then you will explain why you love/are using the icon (who doesn't love talking about their icons, seriously) and then post your explanation/this meme in your journal for other people to squee about their icons, and basically it will be a huge squee-fest of love and 100x100 square pixels.

I have a ridiculous love of Toy Story, or pretty much any movie made by Pixar. And there are times when I’m just too geeky to live (I can go on and on about the wonders of Antarctic algae for example).

While I’m not the Wingnut I used to be, I still quote The West Wing whenever the opportunity presents itself, particularly Toby Ziegler, who gets some of the best lines, and this one is one of my absolute favourites. It’s about tempting fate, something I try to avoid at all costs. It’s from Election Night BTW

The creation of the Earth scene in The Runaway Bride is one of my favourites in New Who, it’s so beautifully done I ended up making it the centre of a fanvid. And the reason for having a Ten & Donna icon I’ll explain below.

I’m well aware that there is a lot of Donna/Catherine Tate hate in DW fandom. But I adore her to bits, and every now and again I feel I need to take on a fandom crusade, so mine is to convince the whole world that Donna is going to be a brilliant companion, starting with my flatmate, who BTW eventually conceded a couple of weeks ago that Donna isn’t so bad, because at least she’s not Martha. So now I’m putting my energy into convincing her Martha’s pretty damn awesome (because she is).

This is from a batch of icons made out of Titanic quotes. I just love the irony, and the fact that it applies so readily to fandom sometimes.

This is my Slytherin icon. I’m not one of those Slyther-fen ‘oh the Malfoys/Voldemort/Bellatrix are just misunderstood wobbies’ type of HP fan because they are horrible people, but I do find characters who use their wits and have ambition and can be slightly morally grey more interesting, see for example Noah Bennet, James Norrington and Harriet Jones. And I maintain that ambition is not a bad quality for a person to possess. An amoral pursuit of ambition is bad, but ambition alone it essentially a good thing.

I scoured the Coupling communities on LJ forever to find this one and love it. It’s a simple equation really: Jack Davenport + Coupling + Pop Art = Win

I'm excited about the CiN special too!

And people don't like Donna? Really? Seriously? Why not? I think she's great!

The Donna hate runs from ‘she does nothing but yell’ and ‘Catherine Tate can’t act’ (which makes me wonder if those people actually watched The Runaway Bride) to ‘she’s two dumb to travel with the Doctor because she missed an alien invasion as she had a hangover’, which personally only endears her to me more since I can imagine myself doing that.

Though it's Who fandom *sigh*. They always think things are the end of the world and aren't nice about it. Apparently David Tennant checked out the Outpost Gallifrey boards the day his casting was announced and was devastated at the amount of hate aimed at him.

Pft! That's the reason I love Donna. She's real! We don't always want someone who is a know-it-all, or knows instinctively what to do. The fact that she yells and has hangovers, makes her distinctly different from the other two companions that Nine & Ten have had. But then again, a lot of people don't like change, especially in regard to their favourite fandoms.

And that is sad about the Outpost Gallifrey boards. And to think that DT has come to be one of the most popular Doctor's ever. As I said, a lot of the hate is just based around change, I guess, or fear of the unknown.

Personally, I can't wait to see Donna in action, and get to know her more.

She's real!

Exactly! To a certain extent, the companion does act as a viewer substitute, and if they set the bar too high all the time, you lose interest. And that doesn’t mean that all companions have to come from a lower socio-economic background or even be human, they just have to have identifiable flaws that they struggle against because that’s what we all go through in every day life. And the thing about a person’s flaws is that sometimes they also turn out to also be their greatest strengths.

And it’s so ironic that Who fandom is resistant to change, given the nature of the show. It’s a cliché to say it, but it’s a cliché because it’s true: the one constant on Doctor Who is change. Hell, there’s even been seasons in the show's history without the TARDIS.

I was one of the people who originally was not thrilled when it was announced that Donna would be the new companion. I honestly didn't (and still don't) like TRB, but I think that has more to do with Rusty not having enough plot to fill out 60 minutes than Tate. TRB would have worked better as a regular 45 minute episode, with less running around and screaming.

However, the more I thought about Season Three, the more annoyed I became with Ten. By the end, I ended up *wanting* a companion who's willing to slap him when he needs it and call him out when he's being an assaht (which was about 90% of the time in Season Three).

You and I are obviously going to have to agree to disagree in Season 3, because I really liked Ten throughout. Or rather, he didn't bother me in the same degree that he did you. Granted, I haven't seen the last four episodes yet, but I just rub my hands with glee when characters are acting like idiots - it makes the come down even more fun to watch, and I think Donna will be just the gal to do that (but hopefully not too much, because after all, he is still the Doctor).

Aaaaaaaand I just realized that the person I was responding to was [livejournal.com profile] artic_fox, in whose journal I've already said the same thing a half dozen times.
