meddow: Lix Storm (Starbuck)

I've finished season three of Battlestar Galactica, which like season two, opens strong and ends strong but kind of drifts away in the middle. I think the writers have a bit of trouble trying to come up with filler episodes. I have to confess though, I loved the boxing episode. I know that's not a popular one, but Starbuck and Apollo beat the shit out of each other and Roslin and Adama get stoned, what's not to like?

Because I'm a dork, I took notes after watching episodes, which are below the cut. The short version was that season three me was about occupation, suicide bombing, genocide, war crimes tribunals, torture, marriages, haircuts, weight gain and loss, everyone needing a hug, the quadrangle of doom, threesomes, pretty temple sets, Lee being annoying (and then redeeming himself), me constantly changing my opinion about Helo, the Chief's boring marriage problems, Adama and Roslin UST, Roslin becoming a very scary person, STARBUCK!!! and who hates Gaius Baltar the most (it's a tie between Gaeta and Roslin).

The one with the suicide bombing

Starbuck had reached new levels of both badass and messed up with the calmly sitting down to eat a steak. Lol Apollo. I'm so glad every character is commenting on how bad he looks. Please let Starbuck say something. Please. How he got fat I can understand, what I don't understand is how he managed to get the world's worst spray tan while drifting in space. Does the colonial fleet have a tanning salon? EJO reminds me of back when he was Justice Mendoza on The West Wing with that moustache.

I must have switched off my brain, because it took me till most of the way through the episode to realise that Humans are the Iraqis and Cylons are the Americans in this little parable. Or maybe Iraq just isn't at the forefront of my mind right now (now if there was some form or economic crisis on New Caprica…) I wish I were watching this when if first aired.

Also, lol Baltar. Everyone wants him dead. He should have taken Roslin's out back in the second series, however this is way entertaining.

The one with Roslin's death warrant

I kind of want to give Baltar a hug. Cally is annoying. OMFG the ending. Wow.

The two in which Adama is awesome

On the in desperate need for a hug list: Saul Tigh, Starbuck and Gaeta. Galactica jumping into orbit, freefalling, sending out the vipers and jumping back was frakking awesome. As was Roslin's 'that's my ship' re: Colonial One (yay, she's back). And there was both Henry and Ashley from Sanctuary – that would be the Vancouver acting pool at work.

The one with the airlocking, and Baltar and Roslin make out (if only in his mind)

Well, that's one way to get around the problem of war crimes. Okay, Tigh and Starbuck no longer get hugs for acting like jerks. Gaeta still gets a hug. As does the Chief.

Roslin now reminds me of Julius Caesar, with Adama as her Mark Anthony. Elect someone who is not her, and the soldiers will march through Rome.

Lol Baltar's dream. He's such a little kid in need of approval.

The one with the plague

Like the exploration of the Cylon ship. The hybrid reminds me of Minority Report. Glad to see Starbuck get a hug.

That eye of the lion scene with Gaeta, Roslin and Adama was just so cute, as is the little girl who plays Cassie.

I'm starting to really like Helo.

The one where they nearly commit genocide

Okay, I don’t like Helo anymore. He was right, it's genocide and they shouldn't go through with it because it would make them no better than the Cylons, but did he have to be so very self-righteous about it. Adama thought the same thing and managed to not sound self-righteous, but then passing the buck didn't exactly endear him on the matter either. Yeah, let Roslin lose her soul on this one. Nice.

Though the Helo stuff was worth it just to hear Roslin's response to Helo's comment that New Caprica was about Cylons and Humans living in harmony. Nice touch that the whole New Caprica thing is an exposed nerve for everyone who was there, not just those such as Starbuck and Tigh with PTSD.

I remember when Apollo was the conscience and not the loudest advocate of genocide in the room.

I'm not comfortable with torture scenes, and that one with Baltar went on just a bit too long for my liking.

The one where Adama blames himself for the war (and Roslin is awesome, but she always is)

Glad there was very little of 'Baltar get's tortured by Cylons' plot this week. It was getting boring. However, whatever's going on with No.3 is interesting.

Love how Starbuck and Tigh are now close buddies. Roslin is awesome.

The one with the boxing

Oh, I love this show.

Starbuck no longer needs a hug. Although, Dee desperately does. And Anders.

The one with the radiation

Nooooo. Not Kat. I liked Kat. Damn you show, making me cry and everything.

The one with the temple

Pretty temple set is pretty. Lol Cavil attempting to give away Baltar.

So Roslin/Adama – kind of on the rocks now? "You stole my adopted Cylon's daughter, and so I shall passively aggressively nuke your temple and a whole bunch of my adopted kids and actual kid with it."

The one with the supernova

I have never loved Dee more that I did in this episode. She's too good for Apollo. Dee, ditch him and hook up with Anders – he's not as smart, but he's hotter. Or have your own affair with Starbuck.

So, trying to hold the temple, and there's translating with the ancient sign – this episode really reminded me of Stargate. You know, this series would fit into the Stargate 'verse quite nicely (which is all about transplanted humans across the galaxy).

Episode two of Roslin being called on her shit. Liked Helo this episode. Roslin really needed to be called on her baby-napping, but you've kind of got to feel sorry for her since there is no way she could have done the right thing re the baby. I mean, she did the right thing regarding the election, and look how that turned out? Cylon occupation, hundreds dead and one Battlestar destroyed. On the other had, if she had stolen the election, it could have turned out much worse. Really, it sucks to be Roslin because she never can be right.

The one in which the humans torture Baltar

Loved the scene with Baltar and Roslin, with her having him thrown out of the airlock and both actors shouting over each others lines.

Does this mean that he love square thing is over? Yay

The one all about Helo

The episode was not particularly good. Better than the Black Market episode (which is the benchmark for bad in this show), but the evil guy and his reasoning did not make sense.

Anyway, liked Helo in this episode. However, everyone else acted like jerks.

Bwah to Roslin trying to figure out Head!Gaius.

The one with Adama's wife

Seriously, Adama, Roslin, JUST HOOK UP ALREADY. YOU BOTH CLEARLY LOVE EACH OTHER AND WANT SEX

With the characters' back story before the genocide, I've decided its more miss than hit. Apollo's in Black Market was just random. I thought the Tigh and Adama stuff was a bit boring. Roslin's was the only thing that really worked, but that's because it just highlighted the awesomeness of Laura Roslin (and she always spoke of Adar with such affection, it's not surprising they had an affair). Adama's stuff with his dead ex-wife was good until the revelation she was an alcoholic. Why? What was the point? Making Adama feel more guilt (because he's got enough of that already)? Or making Apollo more boringly angsty? I'm pretty sure it's never going to be mentioned ever again.

The stuff with the Chief and Cally was boring. I like the Chief, but I really don't care about his family problems.

The one with the strike

I'd like to have seen the Raptor crash into Colonial One, or some of the messy aftermath.

Roslin was very scary in this episode. Getting people arrested because they annoyed her? Book burning? Someone really needs to stand up to her, but preferably doing it without destroying her.

The poor Chief was in a tough spot. Roslin and Adama weren't exactly listening, but the rising champion of the little people is clearly in it only for himself, because it's frakking Baltar.

That last scene reminded me how much I miss Starbuck. She hasn't had a decent storyline all season.

The one in which Starbuck bites it

STARBUCK!!!!!

Okay, I know she'll be back – but will she be the same?

Adama needs a hug.

The one with the cat

Baltar's lawyer gives me the creeps. Wow, Apollo is easy to manipulate.

The one with the trial

I hope Helo gets the fleet after Adama eventually retires or dies. He's a good commander.

Loved the recall of the Roslin and Lee's interaction from way back in the mini series when they were on the stand. They used to be friends once, and it was sweet and I even shipped them a little. What happened?

Oh Lee, protecting the system is one thing, but forcing Roslin to admit her cancer on the stand to get back at his father was beneath him. Or it once was. And, while Roslin really needs to be called on her the growing tyrannical nature of her Presidency, that wasn't call her on that.

Tory needs a hug. So does Tigh. And Roslin. No hug for Lee.

The one with Hendrix

How, how can I go from hating Lee Adama to loving him so damn quickly? That was one hell of a speech, not just acquitting Baltar, but making me want Baltar to be acquitted and making sense of Lee's character development over the past few episodes/entire run of the series. He's not Adama's heir, he's Roslin's. All his angst about military of the past three seasons was because he hadn't discovered yet that he's really a civilian leader and not a military one. Finally, there's a character in line to succeed Roslin and the leader of humanity.

The revelation of the four cylons would have been better if they hadn't actually spoke out the lyrics. I thought that was just a little lame.

Finally: STARBUCK!!!

I am completely head over heals in love with this show.

It's great reading your BSG thoughts since I'm also head over heels for the show right now. I watched the first three seasons straight through the same way last year, and I totally agree that two and three are kind of uneven in the middle. One of my friends has listened to all the episode commentaries, and she told me that some of the episodes are apparently the start of subplots that they decided not to follow. Also they didn't know what to do with Lee, and it shows.

I've heard that the one with the boxing is unpopular in fandom, and I cannot fathom why. I felt kind of cheated by the jump forward in time on New Caprica, so I was so happy to finally get some explanation of what went on there, especially with Lee and Kara. Plus Adama and Roslin are just so freaking adorable.

No spoilers bit about season 4: I think it's stronger overall. It's been awhile since I watched 4.0, but 4.5 had great episodes week after week.

I quite glad they dropped some of those subplots. The stuff with the Sagitarians ethnic conflict and class conflict was done in such a superficial way that I don't think I could have dealt with more than one episode about them. Usually the show tackles issues with a lot more thought than those two were given.

I felt totally ripped off by the time jump as well at the end of season two, but now I'm really glad they skipped it and gave it to use as flashbacks. Knowing the suffering that was to come made happy moments and hope wonderfully bittersweet. That's one of the things I love so much about the show, the happy moments are hard earned and never completely free from sadness.

Huh. I disliked the boxing, but all my friends lurved it--so you're not alone. I think it just wasn't my thing. Considering Gaius is my favorite character, it's likely we won't necessarily see eye-to-eye on some stuff, but *shrug* I love his lawyer. And that guy keeps popping up as a semi-permanent character in random tv shows. First as Badger in Firefly, then Battlestar, and now Leverage and Dollhouse. His showing up in Dollhouse makes me all kinds of giddy, since he's sort of Ballard's nemesis, and Ballard is played by Tahmoh Penikent(sp?), aka: Helo!

Totally love Lee during and post-Baltar trial. I'm about 90% sure it's because he got rid of his uniform and suited up. God, but I'm a sucker for an intelligent-sounding man in a suit. (And oh my God, it should almost be a spoiler, but his hair in 4.5 is gloriously gorgeous).

OMG, he is Badger off Firefly! I was wondering where I knew him from. I kind of forgot to mention it, but I ended up liking the lawyer quite a bit by the end. The bit where he and Lee just dump Baltar after getting him off was awesome. Actually, the whole trial was pretty fantastic because I like Baltar the most when he's freaking out about just been dumped in a whole heap of trouble, so everything with him during the trial and post-trial was great.

And now I'm going to have to watch Dollhouse, just to see Helo.

Normally, I'm a big fan of uniforms, but actually Jamie Bamber does look better in the suit. Or maybe it's because I vastly prefer Lee as a politician to a military officer. He's just a better character as a civilian. He actually seems to have a purpose for once.

"omgI'mintrouble!Baltar" is absolutely the best form of Baltar there is. I liked the trial, except when I was watching I was sure they were going to find him guilty and kill him, so I was terrified at the same time. I should really rewatch so I can enjoy it now that I know he's going to be okay.

Jamie Bamber totally rocks out a suit. Of course, so does James Caville. I have got to find more shows/movies they're in...

Speaking of which, is it bad that I really want them both to be on Doctor Who at some point?

It's weird, because I never really scared for a character's life because so far I've always had a vague idea of what's going to happen. But thinking about it, the show would have probably driven me nuts if I watched it when it aired and without spoilers. I would have been terrified that Roslin was going to die of cancer in season two and that Starbuck was gone for good etc.

They're British. I think it's only natural to want them on Doctor Who at some point. Hell, I want every actor I like to be on Doctor Who at some point, whether they're located in the UK or not.
