Planet of the Dead
Apr. 12th, 2009 03:45 pmOMFG! It'll knock four times and the Midnight theme. OMFG it's the Midnight monster! THE MIDNIGHT MONSTER WILL KILL TEN!
Basically really liked this episode. It wasn't brilliant, but it was lots and lots of fun, quite like Gareth Roberts' previous episodes.
Did they do up the opening credits sequence? It seemed like the CGI was clearer than it used to be. Part of the update for HD?
David Tennant seems to have a lot more energy than he did in The Next Doctor. The break seems to have been good for him.
Michelle Ryan's character was great. Yay posh almost ninja companion! Makes me think that the writers were listening to those who wanted Martha to be a posh ninja lesbian (i.e. the anti-Rose) back in the days before season three – they were half way there with Christina. Also, wasn't Ace's replacement supposed an aristocratic thief?
Anyway, I'd love to see her turn up in her flying double-decker bus another time. I'm kind of glad she's not going to be a full time Companion though sadly, I didn't think she and David Tennant had all that much chemistry. (Weren't sparks supposed to fly? Not so much from my perspective, although I loved that she 'flew' down the shaft).
UNIT! I forgot they were in this episode. I always like it when their shooting things actually works. Those poor two guys enlisted into UNIT. They'll end up being cannon fodder for the next alien invasion. Becoming a private in UNIT isn't a reward, it’s a death sentence.
I adore Captain Magambo. Once she pulled the gun on Malcolm though I was terrified she wouldn't live through the episode. Congratulations show on letting a female character in a position of power commit a morally ambiguous act and actually live, and keep her job
Malcolm was hilarious. He came very close to being too over the top at points, but never crossed the line. I'm sad that he didn't snog the Doctor at the end.
So, regarding the 'spaceman' conversation, Donna is the new Rose? She gets a reference in every episode in a 'the Doctor is sad' scene. I wouldn't have thought it would because Donna's my favourite character and I miss her, but this bugs me almost as much as it did when he was referencing Rose all the time, who I didn’t miss. Maybe because it felt awkwardly sandwiched in there like the obligatory references to Torchwood were back in season two.
And yay! Lindsey Duncan next time!

That would be fantastic. YES PLEASE!

I was really torn by my feelings at the line. On one hand I was all DONNA REFERENCE and on the other it just felt awkward and sandwiched.
