Just caught the finale episode of Rome, the series with 2000 year old canon, scenes that would make Torchwood blush and mummy and daddy issues that makes Heroes’ look tame – oh I love it.

It is something of a shame no more was made, but I suppose, where do you go from Octavian becoming first citizen of Rome? (Are historical events spoilers?)

Speaking of Heroes, I was bored at work today and had something of a cracktasic thought – since the show has the House of M, the natural progression is to establish the House of N. And then I found my Heroes OT3, Nathan/Niki/Noah – Claire’s two Dads meet Micah’s two Mums. Think about it – they can swap gun and marriage tips (cheating on, shooting and memory erasing ones spouse = bad) and compare their similar power of making Matt a more interesting character while bemoaning prophetic painting, season finales and unfortunate mortality

Why does this not exist? The alphabet commands it!

Though I am not the first: Isaac totally ships the House of N )

Okay, I think that’s quite enough of a glimpse of what goes on in my head for one day.

I’m bored. I am completely and utter mind numbing bored and there’s not much I can do about it and fandom, my usual refuge in these sort of situations, is not helping. All my fandoms either have ended or have no new canon coming for a while. Doctor Who until at least March and Heroes not at any point in the foreseeable future due to the strike. Though with trailers around for both and both look fabulous, but there have been no juicy spoilers for a while and trailers just won’t cut it since all they do is rub salt in the wound. I’m relying on the weekly Heroes graphic novels for all my fandom kicks. I really need some new canon.

I really want to see Cloverfield. Or drink a Slusho. The lack of an advertising campaign/cryptic references in random places advertising campaign has really worked on me. And, you know - Gigantic Monster. Attacks New York. I'm so there.

You know how I’ve been pretty anti the Doctor/Companion romances in New Who and was practically leaping for joy at finally getting a Companion that’s not going to have a crush on the Doctor. Well, I think Ten/Donna’s my current favourite Who ship. What is wrong with me? Promise me no romance and suddenly I want it.

And in cool fandom things on YouTube: A Fake trailer for The Company Man Movie. I want this to be a real movie.

So tonight it's been 'I want' 'I want' 'I want' and I don't think I'm going to get. But I'm an adult which means I'm allowed to behave like a petulant child. Okay, that’s everything on my mind for the evening. I think I shall return to acting on that Heroes plot bunny that’s be bugging me all week.

I'm involved fandoms for the characters. It always starts with me wanting more of x character and my fandom obsession of late has been with two characters, Donna Noble from Doctor Who and Noah Bennet from Heroes. It's kind of odd since they’re both very different. Anyway, I bring fic recs, graphic novel recs and fanvid recs connected to both characters. But I also decided to write a bit about just why I adore them in an attempt to capture the reason for my obsessions of late.

Heroes - Bennet recs )

I think I’ve lost all objectivity when it comes to discussing episodes of Doctor Who. Well, I’m a fan so I never really had any objectivity, so really I’ve just shed any pretensions to objectivity. Because Voyage of the Damned was occasionally cheesy and a little contrived, but damn I loved every single minute of it. Because new Who! And June was such a long time ago (and March/April/May/Whenever season 4 is due to begin seems so far away).

Voyage of the Damned )

Meanwhile, in Heroes graphic novels related excitement. They gave us HRG taking out a super with a baseball bat for Christmas. Oh, Heroes, please never change. (You know, one day I’m going to have to explore my inner contradiction of deploring violence IRL but loving it in fictional characters. But today is not that day, I feel).

So the season three of Heroes sneak peek looks spectacularly awesome. Certainly the volume is living up to its name – HRG, Angela, Elle, Bob and Sylar (all of whom I would place in the Heroes rouge gallery) + loads of new villains. I think the show has figured out what the people want (and by ‘people’ I of course mean me). Add some shirtless Petrelli brothers and all the crummy plotlines of last season shall be forgiven. Though will somebody please end the strike so I don’t have to wait until September or later.

In Who related stuff, I’ve been trying to find good Donna fic lately, which is hard. Seems her role in fandom is an enabler of or spectator to Ten/Rose or Ten/Martha (though, oddly enough, not Ten/Jack or Ten/Master) and not as an actual character worthy of her own storyline or perspective. *Sigh*

Back to Heroes again, I’ve also been trying to track down some good HRG fic, and there is a bit of it out there, and I really like Sandra/Bennet. Since Cautionary Tales they’ve been my Heroes OTP. I’m not sure if ‘messed up’ really describes it, it’s kind of Arthur/Molly crossed with Molly/Snape (does that exist?). Though there’s not a lot of that in existence. And, unfortunately, I can’t seem to get my head around Bennet/Anybody not Sandra since he seems to be the least likely character on TV at the moment to cheat on his wife. What with the whole guilt issues of him endangering and memory erasing his family, I hardly think he’s going to add to the mess with infidelity. Plus, dude is loyal to his family, it’s his defining characteristic and greatest redeeming feature. The exception for this mental block for me is the very rare pairing of Bennet/Nathan since Claire’s two alpha dog daddies it is a bit too much to resist. And I once read a rather brilliant piece of Bennet/Sylar.

Anyway, would people be interested in me reccing the good stuff I find?

Lookie: Jack Harkness meets Peter Petrelli

This does pose the question: what would happen should Heroes and the Whoniverse collide?

(Minor S2 spoilers for Heroes)

Mohinder and Peter would make for excellent recruits to Torchwood. They’re certainly qualified – oh so pretty but dumb enough to bringing about the destruction of humanity, they blindly trust the last person they spoke too, the slash can hardly be described as subtext. Plus Peter’s indestructible and prone to standing on top of tall buildings and angsting, and Mohinder’s been known to idiotically shoot people he’s working with and has an ex partial to a bit of head slicing. They’d fit right in with the team.

(I know I should really stop giving Torchwood crew crap. It’s like kicking an ugly puppy – it’s just so easy there’s no satisfaction.)

Meanwhile, Claude would be laying low in Sarah Jane’s attic, unbeknownst to anyone but Sarah and Mr. Smith. Sarah can’t help shake the feeling that she really needs to tell him to shave and put on a leather jacket and Luke’s trying to work out who keeps on nicking the leftovers from the fridge, and his pocket money from out of his pocket.

In Claire the Doctor has the perfect companion. Teenage, blonde and cheery but - unlike Rose - indestructible and capable of living forever and never aging. So, unless there’s some rift action, they can be together forever. Of course Claire’s father would make Francine Jones look positively like a saint and Mr Bennet’s hardly going to let Claire run around space and time with some grinning idiot without a chaperone, leading to the inevitable capslocked meeting of HRG and a Dalek:

“EXTERMINATE!”
“YOU THREATEN MY FAMILY?!”

(Since it’s now been established that HRG is too awesome to die, my money’s on him).

Sandra and Mr. Muggles will come along for the ride too, and Lyle will wait patiently behind for them all, wondering if anyone remembers he exists (what Lyle doesn’t know is that a freak childhood accident involving the TARDIS has left him perception filtered - he's there, but nobody notices).

It shall later be revealed that the Doctor’s not the first Time Lord the Bennet family has been in contact with. The Haitian’s been active on Earth for years and Angela Petrelli’s the stopwatched Rani (it’s those pesky Time Lord genes that prompted Nathan to get into politics).

And while this is all going on, the TARDIS will have a torrid affair with Mr. Muggles. Though the affair will end badly once the TARDIS finds her soul mate in fellow space-time traveller, Hiro Nakamura.

At one point in the episode I was sure Nathan was going to start singing that song.

Please let the writers strike end before next year. I can't bare the thought that I may not get to see Chapter Three until September 2008.

Powerless )

So, the best two episodes of the first chapter/season where Company Man and Five Years Gone, and the best two of the second were Cautionary Tales and Out of Time. I think the lesson is that you can’t really go wrong with HRG-centric episodes and dark futures.
meddow: Lix Storm (Default)
Oh Heroes, you give me a brilliant episode last week and followed it with bit of a let down.

Truth and Consequences )
meddow: Lix Storm (Default)
I still can’t get over this week’s episode of Heroes. I must have watched the hostage exchange/stand off scene about twenty times now. The brilliance is that the show outlined through the painting exactly what was going to happen six episodes earlier, and when it actually happens, it’s was still such a brutal and emotional shock to the system. And I know I say I cry at everything, mainly because I do (funny, because I pretty much never cry about RL stuff, only ever when when watching TV and movies), but very rarely do I cry that much.

Make the writers strike and the season being cut short that much more of a kick in the teeth. I want more Heroes. More!

In other fandom related news, I got a phone call from my brother today. Besides agreeing with me that Noah Bennet is the most awesome character that ever graced TV, he’s all excited because there is only a month until The Voyage of the Damned. Christmas: About presents? Nope. About the birth of Jesus? Certainly not. All about there being a new episode of Doctor Who? Completely.

This reminded me of a little conversation we once had.
Him: As the Doctor says ‘You can trust me on this’
Me: What? That wasn’t the Doctor. That was Pete Tyler
Him: I know. I just didn’t want you to know how much of a Doctor Who geek I was.
I ended up giving him a slap on the back and a “don’t worry, you’re not half as bad as me.”

*hugs her brother*

That was one of the best episodes ever.

In the past I’ve looked down on those people who say they will stop watching/reading etc something if x character gets killed off. I’ve always thought it was rather petty and small and just get over it already. However, since 2007 turned out to be the year that nearly every character I like died (thank goodness Sarah Jane’s heading a kids show) I’ve begun understand and even make this statement myself. And since Heroes may be going down that well tread route of killing of my favourite character tomorrow, I think it’s time for a excessively long Heroes post, just in case my love for the show suddenly turns sour.

Four Months Later to Four Months Ago )

My name is Meddow and it has been two days since I last read any Heroes spoilers. I’m trying to kick the habit. I may be too late to avoid being spoiled to hell, but I have given it up.

Meanwhile, I discovered Adrian Pasdar’s Youtube channel, which is mostly videos of the Heroes cast goofing around mixed with Pasdar’s warped sense of humour. It’s made of win.

And, as it turns out, my Father is getting for Xmas from my Mother a foot tall radio-controlled Dalek Sec toy. It’s really quite neat, the voice sounds just like the Daleks on TV. This probably means that Xmas at my house is going to contain the epic showdown of Dalek vs. Cat. On the one hand, the cat could easily take out a Dalek that size since the cat his huge. But on the other hand, the cat is very nervy so is more likely to run away than fight back. It’s a tough call. Plus, I am jealous. I have no idea what I would do with a remote controlled Dalek, but I still want one.

And finally, I think I have my writing mojo back. Though I really shouldn’t say that in case I jinx it.
meddow: Lix Storm (Default)
Okay, so what I’ve gathered about what is going on in TV land is that there are huge cuts in budgets and staff going on at the BBC due to the government declining to increase the licence fee, which shall mostly affect the news programming and will probably not have an effect on the Whoniverse, but everyone’s holding their breath to see if a second season of The Sarah Jane Adventures is going to be commissioned at the moment and that cannot be helping. And even if it doesn’t have an effect on Doctor Who and related spin-offs, it will have an effect on BBC news programming, and since I swear by BBC World News this is not good.

Meanwhile, in the US, the writers strike has begun, which if it goes on for any decent length of time is going to have huge ramifications for scripted TV there since no more filming is going to happen once they run out of scripts and they’re worried about it to the point where Heroes: Origins (the spin-off) has been pretty much cancelled, and now there’s a rumour floating around that production has been shut down altogether on season 2 of Heroes and it’s now going to be 11 episodes instead of the planned 24. This is very very not good.

Now, there are definitely issues and topic involving these matters that should be carefully discussed and debated, but I don’t care about that right now because they are threatening my TV damn it, so this is personal. Give the BBC money. Give the Writers what they want. I don’t care what has to be done, all I know is that I can't do anything, so just fix it and fix it now!

Just so I can feel I did something remotely productive with my weekend in which I spent the entire time sitting on the couch watching my shiny new Heroes season one box set, I wrote ‘some’ thoughts. ‘Some’ of course meaning about two pages in Word. *cough* Anyway…

Heroes: Season One )

And because I love lists, I present twelve reasons to watch season one:

1. The bridge scene(s) in Company Man, hell, just the entirety of Company Man
2. Matt, Ted and Bennet’s jail spring in 0.07%
3. Any scene in which flying is involved (Hiros, Unexpected, Five Years Gone and How to Stop an Exploding Man)
4. Claude ‘training’ Peter by throwing him off a thirty story building and whacking him with a stick in Distractions and Unexpected
5. Matt vs. Jessica in Run!
6. “Your last thought!” in Landslide (and if you’ve ever watched Doctor Who: The Movie, you’ll probably love this scene even more)
7. Sylar going after Sandra Bennet in Distractions (and Bennet storming into the house, gun drawn: “He dies!”)
8. The entirety of Five Years Gone
9. Claire’s escape from Nathan and Angela in How to Stop and Exploding Man
10. Any scene with Hiro and Nathan (“flying man!”)
11. Hiro, Charlie and the paper cranes in Six Months Ago
12. How, in the end, they stop an exploding man.

Due to what happened to be playing on TV and the fact I was up to that episode in my marathon, I just ended up watching Family of Blood followed by Company Man, the saddest episodes ever of Doctor Who and Heroes respectively. So I’m feeling just a little bit drained.

On the other hand it kind of wins that Doctor Who was followed by the episode of Heroes that not only manages to have a scene with both a former Doctor and a former Master, but also a scene with a former Doctor, a former Master and Mr. Sulu, making it the pinnacle (so far) of Heroes’ geeky casting.

You know, sometimes I take a step back and realise that I’m getting excited about iconic sci-fi actor casting and know that cannot be normal. But normal is boring, so screw it. I’m happy being geeky.

Oh, and: Dear Heroes, please be casting Paul McGann as something. You know you want to (or even better – Tom Baker)
meddow: Lix Storm (Default)
I’ve been keeping up what’s been happening on Heroes lately, because I do love that show, in particularly Mr. Bennet. My love of that character knows no bounds. The Heroes writers better not kill off my favourite character, or I’ll…I’ll…whinge about it (and quite possibly get bored with the show and stop watching). I’m not having a very good favourite character year, they all tend to be killed off, and not in particularly brilliant manners either (what is worse – death by stick or death by randomly inserted sentence?). On the other hand, placing HRG in jeopardy is a bloody good way to keep me tuning in every week, and they would have to be idiots to kill him off and I think the writers realise that. After all, there is one general rule to Heroes and that is the further a character is removed from the Bennets, the more boring that character is (there are notable exceptions to this rule, but it holds for the most part). So killing off Mr. Bennet, resident bad ass and father of the year, would be a bad move.

Meanwhile, SJA is having something of a negative effect on me. It’s actually making me consider watching Casino Royale. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned this before, but I hate James Bond movies. This is completely at odds with my entire family and my best friend who happen to all love Bond films, which is probably why I’ve stuck my heels in and have been so adamant that I will not watch them for so long. Basically, when I was about twelve I decided I despised the treatment of women in the films and haven’t really watched one since. But anyway, I found out Joseph Millson, a.k.a Maria’s lovely too-hot-to-have-a-teenage-daughter father is in it. And now I want to watch. Damn it.

Though my desire to watch Casino Royale is pretty much nothing to the fact that having seen the trailer and something about it on TV, I really really want to see Atonement. This is also somewhat [livejournal.com profile] artic_fox's fault, since she put it on my radar in the first place. Something to look forward too when I emerge fully of my current assessment hell, I suppose.

Yatta!

Heroes finale tonight! Heroes finale tonight!

Really, I had no idea I would like the show so much. I tuned into the first few episodes, gave it a meh and decided not to watch any more. Well, really it didn’t get interesting until the “save the cheerleader, save the world” plot kicked in. And even then, it took the awesomeness of Sylar (I shall not rest until I get my Voldemort-Sylar fight), Mr. Bennet’s gradual transformation from creepy bad guy to father of the year and Christopher Eccleston whacking Milo Ventimiglia over the head with a stick (something I wanted to do the whole time he was on Gilmore Girls) before I really started to love it.

Anyway, thank goodness my flatmate got hooked and made me watch more.
meddow: Lix Storm (Default)
Isn't anyone else just a little disappointed that we only get one shot of the Order itself in the OotP trailer. On the other hand Tonks! Mad-Eye! Kingsley! Random people! )

Though where on earth is Remus? Don't tell me Harry just decides to go along with the Order without Remus there. He's only been duped by a fake Mad-Eye Moody once before, which only lead to the death of one person. I suppose not quite as bad as choosing an escape convict over Snape before he gets an explanation like in PoA, but movie!Harry's a bit of an idiot (though he gives a good speech, I'll give him that).

Meanwhile my flatmate watched Daleks in Manhattan and she though the random decomposing thing was a Rutan too (well in her words "the enemy of the things" which I've translated to mean Rutans) and she's not half the fangirl I am (and I don't even think she's seen Horror of Fang Rock, just the documentary on Sontarans from the Sontaran Experiment DVD). Maybe the BBC is recycling old props.

Another thing, I cannot express how much I'm loving Heroes right now. Not only is there such a great villain in Sylar (I demand a Sylar vs. Voldemort cage match!), but one of the most complex and interesting relationships in the show is between a father and his daughter. It's tomato soup for the gen loving soul (Tomato soup is infinitely times better then Chicken soup.)

And finally, I was watching Singing in the Rain today and am totally in love with Gene Kelly. He's so dreamy.
meddow: Lix Storm (Default)
Okay so I've been watching Heroes since the beginning of the year and really starting to get into it (I'm up to Distractions but spoiled to hell about what's going to happen) and think I'm becoming a hopeless Mr. Bennet fangirl. I'm all about the glasses, the gun, and the power of being able to conceal his first name. Well, that and his rather lovely prioritising of his family over his evilmorally ambiguous doings.

No, I cannot apparently adore one of the many many hot morally good super-powered characters, nor the resident much-loved-in-fandom brain-deviouring serial killer. Not because I win at deciding that the most interesting character - the one that drags me kicking and screaming into the fandom - is the one that is destined to be shafted by fandom in favour of the pretty. *sigh*

That is all.
